JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: School Nurse - (Non-Teaching)

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of New Hampshire
  2. B.S. in Nursing preferred. Associate's Degree acceptable if candidate is willing to earn B.S. within approved timeline through NH DOE.
  3. Demonstrated experience in pediatric care with 3 year's clinical pediatric nursing experience or related work experience under a valid RN license.
  4. Demonstrated management and human relations skills
  5. School Nurse Certification through the NH DOE *selected applicant will need to apply for this credential if not already held.
  6. Experience in schools, either as a nurse or in some volunteer role preferred

 

DUTIES:

 

Under the direction of the principal:

 

(1)  Conduct health screening of students as directed by the school to include at a minimum, vision, hearing, height, weight, scoliosis screening, and immunization audits in accordance with state law -- with consideration for dental screening.

 

(2)  Provide medical/health services to chronically ill students as needed while at school; first aid as necessary for student injuries; emergency and/or necessary temporary treatment of minor illnesses with referrals to parents or family doctors; administration of medications as prescribed by family doctors and sent to school for the student.

 

(3)  Consult with teachers regarding issues for students with medical/health conditions    

 

(4)  Serve as liaison for families and providers as appropriate to refer students for medical treatment/services and refer families for assistance as appropriate.

 

(5)  Serve as “case managers” for students identified as “educationally handicapped” because of health disorder issues; and participate as appropriate with child study and other educational teams on evaluation of students with suspected health related issues.

 

(6)  Consult with classroom teachers and serve as “guest instructors” for up to 10% of the time in health related issues including human growth (sexuality) issues, nutrition, and hygiene.

 

(7)  Consult with principals and staff on issues of suspected child abuse and/or neglect and/or substance abuse issues.

 

(8)  Work with the staff and students regarding issues of safety to minimize risk of injury or loss of time to students or staff.

 

(9)  Provide staff development training for staff in the areas of first aid, blood borne diseases, and appropriate medical/health needs for the school.

 

(10)  Maintain health records for students and monitor compliance with health related requirements according to state law and district policy.

 

(11)  Assist in the development of the annual budget for the school’s health office.

 

(12)  As appropriate, provide or coordinate wellness opportunities for staff including exercise programs, height, weight, blood pressure screenings, and dietary programs.

 

(13)  Perform other duties as assigned.

 

WORK YEAR:

The work year will be 188 days in conjunction with the adopted school calendar and as described by the Superintendent.  The normal work day will be 7.5 hours.

 

SALARY:

Salary will be determined by the School Board. The benefits will be those for non-contracted (non-union) employees.
