TITLE: Library Media Paraprofessional - part-time
SUMMARY:
The library paraprofessional is a person trained and skilled in the areas of technical services and children’s literature who provides assistance to the professional library information specialists. Under the supervision of the library information specialist, the paraprofessional is responsible for assisting in the
- Administration of the circulation desk
- Supervision of reserve collections
- Direction and supervision of students and volunteers
The paraprofessional offers basic guidance for students in the use of the
- Automated catalog
- Electronic workstations and databases
- Children’s literature
- Audiovisual equipment
The paraprofessional has the ability to work independently and cope with continual interruptions and shifting job priorities. He or she should possess excellent word processing and database skills, and basic knowledge of children’s literature
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires an associate degree or equivalent. The library paraprofessional must possess an interest and affinity for direct work with young people. This is a position that involves a great deal of activity and requires strong public-relations skills.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Understands techniques of controlling and motivating students
- Sets up reserve collections for faculty and students
- Reinforces learning of material and/or skills within the library media center as well as doing book talks and storytelling for classroom or small groups
- Has familiarity with the library’s software collection and how to set up electronic resources for users
- Assist students with setting up and using audiovisual equipment
- Helps to maintain a friendly and cooperative atmosphere for students and faculty
- Is responsible for clipping and filing pamphlet file materials
- Shelves materials
- Performs preliminary automated cataloging for newly acquired materials using cataloging software
- Helps students and faculty locate materials through the use of the automated catalog and print and computer databases
- Maintains and updates databases of purchase orders and videos and periodical collections
- Aids in the preparation of library publications
- Keeps statistical records on usage, circulation, etc.
- Notifies students when reserved books are available
- Assists in preparing bibliographies
- Assists with displays and other special projects
- Supervises and executes automated inventory
- Searches for and verifies bibliographic information
- Supervises circulation desk and procedures
- Performs any other related duties that may be assigned by the library information specialist and/or principal
REPORTING REGULATIONS:
The library paraprofessional is responsible through the library information specialist to the school principal
